The International Honor Society in Psychology was founded to promote excellence in scholarship and advance the science of psychology. The New York University chapter builds on this legacy by facilitating a community where psychology students can excel academically and professionally.

Membership Requirements

Curious about joining Psi Chi? Here are the academic qualifications for undergraduate and graduate students:

Undergraduate Students:

  • Be enrolled as a major or minor in a psychology program or a program psychological in nature (CAMS, Applied Psych, grad student programs qualify).
  • Be at least a second-semester sophomore and have taken four psychology courses. Three can be CAMS (If the application is based on one PSYCH-UA course, the grade for this course must be a minimum of A-).
  • Have earned a cumulative GPA that is in the top 35% of their class (sophomore, junior, or senior) compared to their classmates across the entire university or the college that houses psychology.
  • Have a minimum 3.75 GPA average for psychology courses and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.

Graduate Students:

  • Be accepted into and enrolled in a psychology or closely related graduate program.
  • Have completed at least 9 semester credit hours of graduate psychology courses in that program.
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.75.
  • Meet their graduate program’s requirements (e.g., if specific courses require an A or B, students must meet those requirements even if their cumulative GPA is above 3.75).

Common Requirements for All Members:

  • Have a vested interest in elevating the academic experience within the University.
  • Show clear commitment to research and/or application of psychological constructs.
  • Attend the required application interview.
  • Attend at least one Psi Chi event per semester.
